Spring Airlines: A Successful Domestic Low-Cost Airline


Spring Airlines is the first low-cost airline operated by Chinese privately owned capital, and also the first budget airline started by a travel agency. Being the only survivor of China's first-batch of private airlines, Spring Airlines profited more than 8 billion yuan in 2016, making it one of the most successful domestic low-cost airlines. Headquartered in Shanghai, Spring Airlines have bases located in Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport, Shenyang Taoxian International Airport and Yangzhou Taizhou International Airport. Until the end of first half of 2017, Spring Airlines has increased its fleet of A320s to more than 70. All of them are of economy class configuration, making Spring Airlines one of the few single aircraft fleet airline companies at home. In addition, 60 A320NEOs ordered from Airbus will be delivered from 2019 to 2023.

Business economy

Starting from February 1st 2018, when Spring Festival travel officially started, all the domestic and international flights of Spring Airlines will lift the ban of using mobile phone during flights. At that time, passengers will be allowed to use the mobile phone in flight mode in the sky.

Zhang Wu’an, spokesman for Spring Airlines, uttered that, as the rapid development of modern wireless technology, there is a growing demand for using mobile phone during flight. Several national research institutes and professional organizations, including aircraft manufacturers, have conducted the ongoing research on whether mobile phones can be used in the flight. China Civil Aviation Administration has been working on technical tests and regulations revision etc., and the use of mobile phones on aircraft has been basically mature.


At that time, it is not necessary to power off your phone, but it can only be used in flight mode. “Passengers also have to follow the guidance of the crew at any time,” Zhang said, “If the crew finds any interference, the mobile phone will be banned at any time.”


What’s more, Spring Airlines redefined elderly passenger’s age, increasing it from 75 to 80. Passengers above 80 years old (including 80) are required to provide a valid medical certificate to board. This took effect from February 1, 2018 as a new Spring Festival travel service measure.
