Garmin’s Autoland system proves its life-saving potential in a real-world scenario

In a groundbreaking aviation moment, Garmin’s Autoland system successfully executed its first real-world emergency landing.
For the first time, an aircraft managed to automatically land itself after what turned out to be an in-flight emergency. Two people walked away safely from a Beechcraft Super King Air 200 after it stopped on the runway at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport near Denver, according to a video posted by emergency responders.
The twin-engine turboprop landed securely thanks to Garmin’s Autoland system, which the company claims has been installed in about 1,700 aircraft so far. This incident marks the first complete use of the Autoland system from start to finish in an actual emergency scenario.
Buffalo River Aviation, which had chartered and operated the aircraft, confirmed that the Autoland system automatically engaged during a flight from Aspen with no passengers on board.
When the aircraft began to experience a rapid, uncommanded loss of pressurisation, the Autoland system activated as designed, triggering when the cabin altitude exceeded prescribed safe levels.
Garmin had previously demonstrated the system’s effectiveness back in April, fitting a Cirrus SR22 aircraft with Autoland to test it under controlled conditions. Pressing a large red button activates the aircraft’s autopilot, steering it to a suitable airport and making announcements to air traffic controllers.
Thankfully, no one was harmed. With further development in this technology, more lives can be saved and accidents avoided in the future.
