Gatwick’s Next Big Upgrade Might Park Your Car Before You Even Reach the Terminal

London Gatwick Airport is preparing to introduce autonomous robot parking, allowing travellers to leave their vehicles at a designated drop-off point before robots transport them to parking spaces. The initiative forms part of the airport's broader efforts to use automation and smart technologies to make airport journeys more efficient and less stressful for passengers.

Airport experiences are largely judged by passengers based on what they can see and experience themselves. This includes, but is not limited to, cleaner terminals, faster queues, better lounges, and smoother boarding.


When I visited London for the first time in January, I had the opportunity to arrive at Gatwick Airport. I was pleased to see how the airport had integrated full-body scanners, check-in systems with limited personnel requirements, and, in particular, the fact that I did not have to remove my electronics from my bag for separate screening, something that often involved much more hassle back home in India.


Recently, the airport implemented another technology designed to improve the passenger experience. According to Aviation Week, London Gatwick is preparing to introduce an autonomous parking service in August, allowing passengers to drop off their cars in a designated cabin before heading to the terminal. From there, robots supplied by Stanley Robotics will lift the vehicle by its tyres and move it to a parking space, while passengers keep their keys with them.


The idea has a distinctly futuristic feel to it, but its principle and execution are relatively simple. Airport parking can be a challenge in itself, especially at a large airport handling significant passenger volumes, often making it one of the least enjoyable parts of a journey. Drivers circle for spaces, worry about timing, and then still have to get themselves and their luggage to the terminal.


This new technology introduced by Gatwick aims to streamline that part of the experience. It could save passengers a significant amount of time, and even if one argues that the time savings are modest, the reduction in frustration and inconvenience is difficult to ignore.


This is not an isolated initiative but part of Gatwick's wider objective to innovate the airport experience. International Airport Review has described London Gatwick's innovation strategy as one shaped by autonomous technology, robotics, and smart airport solutions. Abhi Chacko, Head of Innovation at the airport, has discussed how emerging technologies can positively influence the wider airport ecosystem.


Robotics, smart stands, automation, and better use of data all point towards the same objective: making a busy airport more efficient without creating unnecessary disruption for passengers. The principle behind much of this technological integration is that it works so smoothly it is barely noticed.
