Demand for locations along the eclipse's path has increased, according to new data from travel technology company Amadeus. Travellers are planning once-in-a-lifetime trips to see the phenomenon, with Spain and Iceland seeing notable increases in both flight and hotel reservations.
Spain will be most affected by the eclipse, which is set for August 12, 2026. It will be the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain in almost 120 years, making it a historic occasion for the nation's tourism sector as well as the international astronomical community. With total eclipses anticipated in 2027 and 2028, Spain is establishing itself as one of the top locations for astronomy tourism worldwide.
Bookings for flights to airports in the eclipse corridor for arrivals between August 7 and August 12 have risen by 25% from the same period in 2025, according to Amadeus Travel Intelligence. As tourists schedule their travels around the best viewing opportunities, the biggest demand is anticipated immediately before the eclipse, with arrivals reaching roughly 40% higher than last year.
The effects go well beyond aviation. Stronger advance bookings are already benefiting lodging operators in Spain and Iceland, according to hotel performance statistics from Amadeus Demand360®. The Average Daily Rate (ADR) has risen by an astounding 36%, demonstrating both growing demand and hotels' ability to command premium pricing during high-interest events, while occupancy levels have improved by 16% year over year.
There are some locations that are growing especially quickly. With a noteworthy 366% rise in bookings over 2025, Bilbao has emerged as the standout performer. Valencia has witnessed a 137% increase in bookings, while Asturias comes in second with a 292% increase. These regions are expected to offer excellent viewing conditions alongside a variety of cultural, culinary, and recreational experiences.
The eclipse's global appeal is similarly remarkable. The United States, Japan, Argentina, and Canada are among the leading international source markets for long-haul travellers, who are arriving from all over the world. Their interest demonstrates how significant astronomical events are increasingly acting as catalysts for international tourism rather than functioning solely as local attractions.
Travel patterns are also shifting. Rather than taking extended holidays, many tourists are organising itineraries specifically around the eclipse. Short stays of one to five days have increased by 57%, according to Amadeus data, indicating that travellers are scheduling visits specifically around the limited viewing window. Couples continue to represent the largest travel segment, accounting for more than 40% of all visitors and increasing by 18% over the previous year. The 48% increase in solo travel reflects the broader trend towards independent, experience-led travel.
Interestingly, booking trends suggest that anticipation for astronomical events begins well before the event itself. Amadeus observed noticeable increases in reservations in September 2025 and March 2026, corresponding with widely reported total lunar eclipses visible in various parts of the world. These findings suggest that major celestial events are exerting an increasing influence on travel planning months in advance.
Eclipse tourism is emerging as a developing market with considerable commercial potential for destinations, airlines, and accommodation providers. Unlike traditional seasonal demand, astronomical events generate predictable but highly concentrated booking windows, enabling operators to optimise capacity, pricing strategies, and tailored travel experiences.
As Spain prepares to host this year's eclipse along with total eclipses in 2027 and 2028, industry experts believe the country has a rare opportunity to establish itself as the global centre of astro-tourism. Beyond attracting international visitors, these events may also help distribute tourism more evenly by drawing travellers to rural and inland regions, creating long-term economic benefits that extend far beyond the eclipse's brief period of darkness.
