The recent hurricane over the North Atlantic, named Hurricane Melissa, has caused significant disruption to airline operations in the region. Airports in the path of the storm have sustained significant damage.
Montego Bay Airport in Jamaica was among those affected. Part of its terminal infrastructure has also been damaged, and the airport will remain closed until restoration work is completed. Relief and aid operations are already underway.
The disruption has caused delays in one of the busiest flight corridors in the world: the North Atlantic Tracks. This aerial route connects North America and Europe. In addition to the flight delays, severe storms of this nature often cause chaos on the ground, resulting in damage to infrastructure.
Jamaica has been severely affected by the hurricane, as Montego Bay Airport serves as the country’s main hub of air transport. Airlines such as Condor and Edelweiss have cancelled services to and from the airport.
The most extensive damage has been identified in the section of the terminal containing gates one to five, which is currently inoperable and will require significant maintenance. Adjacent gates six and seven will also be closed for the time being. However, the remainder of the terminal, comprising twelve other gates, has sustained only minor damage and may resume operations shortly.
Locations including, Bermuda and the Turks and Caicos have also been affected, indicating that ground infrastructure in these areas has likely been impacted as well.
