Digital Distractions in the Cockpit: A Safety Perspective

ree

The aviation industry has always valued professionalism, precision, and a strong commitment to safety. However, recent trends show that the cockpit is being quietly changed by social media.

On social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, some pilots are turning the cockpit into a stage. They are taking selfies and sharing in-flight videos with thousands of followers. While this might seem like a fun way to build a personal brand or offer a behind-the-scenes look at flying, a growing number of incidents raise concerns about how this kind of digital expression could affect flight safety.

There has been a clear increase in reports about the dangers of casual use of personal devices in the cockpit. In one case, a camera fell beneath the sidestick and caused a sudden descent, injuring passengers. In another instance, filming equipment blocked the thrust levers and disrupted engine control. Additionally, a dropped phone started releasing fumes during flight, distracting the crew and raising air quality issues. These incidents highlight the importance of keeping the flight deck free of unnecessary items, especially during the critical phases of a flight.

Social media use by flight crew is getting more attention. EasyJet pilots were suspended for making Snapchat videos while flying. A UK pilot was reported for filming during important safety procedures. These incidents show a change that challenges the line between personal expression and professional behavior.

At Brookfield Aviation International, we expect the highest standards of safety and professionalism in the cockpit. Digital media has increased chances for engagement, but we think the flight deck should focus on safe operations, not content creation. Sharing insights is important when done responsibly and with compliance with safety rules and regulations. We urge our pilots to act with integrity, remain alert, and represent the industry with pride.
