In August, London's famous Heathrow Airport achieved a new milestone by becoming the first major European hub to welcome 8 million travellers in a single month. This achievement reinforces its position as a strategic gateway to the United Kingdom.
The first date of the month was the busiest in Heathrow’s history, with over 270,000 travellers passing through the airport. Terminal 5 also set a new a record, processing 112,000 passengers on 22 August.
Given the high volume of travellers, one might expect disruptions. However, the airport’s staff and management maintained excellent service throughout the month, and the statistics speak for themselves.
98% of bags arrived on the same flight as their owners. 96% of passengers passed through security in under five minutes. Heathrow recorded its most punctual August to date, maintaining its status as the most punctual airport in its category in Europe.
Same-day flight cancellations dropped by a third compared to the previous year, while the number of passengers travelling without their baggage decreased by 42% year-on-year.
With the airport operating at full capacity and processing large number of travellers daily, the British government has decided to expand the airport with an additional runway, which could begin operations within the next 10 years.
