The UK Civil Aviation Authority’s STEM programme is helping inspire young people to explore careers in aviation, supporting the next generation of pilots, engineers, and aerospace innovators.

When we think about aviation safety in the United Kingdom, most people immediately picture pilots, aircraft, and air traffic control. Behind all of that, however, is the organisation quietly ensuring everything runs safely and smoothly: the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
The CAA’s responsibilities are broad and essential. It oversees the safe operation of everything that flies, from commercial airliners and helicopters to drones, gliders, hot-air balloons, rockets, and even model aircraft. Beyond the skies, it also ensures airlines meet strict safety and security standards, protects passengers in airports and aerodromes, and helps travellers return home when plans go wrong through schemes such as ATOL protection.
But safety is only part of the story. The CAA is also looking ahead and investing in the people who will shape aviation’s future.
Building the Future Through STEM
Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) are at the heart of modern aviation. Recognising this, the CAA has developed a dedicated STEM programme designed to help young people discover the possibilities within this fast-evolving industry.
The goal is both simple and powerful: inspire curiosity, develop technical skills, and open doors to careers in aviation and aerospace.
Aviation and aerospace are changing rapidly. New technologies, evolving regulations, and increasing global connectivity mean the industry requires fresh ideas, diverse perspectives, and new talent to keep pace.
The CAA’s STEM initiative aims to make these opportunities visible and accessible, encouraging students to explore career pathways they may never have considered.
Hands-On Learning and Career Discovery
A central feature of the programme is practical engagement.
Young people can take part in career discovery tools, including quizzes designed to match their interests with potential aviation and aerospace roles. These tools help students understand how their strengths and passions might translate into careers within the industry.
The programme also partners with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, offering structured STEM activities that contribute toward bronze, silver, and gold awards. Over several months, participants gain hands-on experience while building practical knowledge and confidence.
For many students, these experiences provide their first real connection to the aviation world.
Supporting Teachers, Families and Future Talent
The programme also recognises the important role educators and families play in shaping career decisions.
To support this, the CAA provides a wide range of free educational resources. Lessons, activities, and learning pathways connect STEM subjects directly to aviation and space, turning classroom theory into real-world application.
By linking mathematics, physics, engineering and technology to the aviation sector, the programme helps students see how academic subjects translate into exciting career possibilities.
It also creates a collaborative environment where students, teachers, parents, and aviation professionals can engage with the world of flight together.
From Virtual Beginnings to a Nationwide Initiative
The CAA’s STEM programme began in June 2020 as a virtual initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic, when traditional work experience opportunities became limited.
In just five years, it has grown into a nationwide programme reaching thousands of students through virtual work experience, skills programmes, and industry partnerships.
The rapid growth reflects both the demand for STEM engagement and the aviation sector’s increasing need to build a future workforce.
People at the Heart of Aviation’s Future
Beyond the technology, resources, and structured learning, the programme’s true impact lies in its people.
Mentors, educators, and aviation professionals bring the programme to life by sharing their experience and helping young learners understand how the industry works.
For many students, meeting someone already working in aviation makes the possibility of a career in the sector feel real and achievable.
Because for the Civil Aviation Authority, safeguarding aviation’s future is not only about regulating aircraft.
It is about inspiring the next generation who will design, operate, and protect the skies for decades to come.
