The busiest air route in the world is South Korea’s Seoul–Jeju corridor, carrying nearly 40,000 passengers daily due to massive tourism demand.

One might expect that the route holding the title of the world’s busiest flight could be Jeddah to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia or Mumbai to Delhi in India. However, a route that has not always been in the spotlight carries around 40,000 passengers every day and tops the list. Hint: it is a South Korean flight.
Jeju Island has long been a popular holiday destination for South Korean as well as international tourists. As a result, the route between Jeju International Airport and Seoul’s Gimpo Airport is the busiest in the world. Domestic travellers have given this trip a status like a rite of passage.
A total of seven airlines operate on this route, with over 130 daily departures during peak holiday seasons. While this may sound excessive, demand is so high that carriers continue to schedule multiple flights to meet passenger needs.
Jeju Island itself is a major tourist attraction. Located around 80 km from the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula, it is known for its natural beauty, strong cultural identity, and diverse food scene. Key attractions include Hallasan volcano and Cheonjiyeon Falls.
The island has also been recognised as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since 2007, further increasing its global appeal.
South Korea’s proximity to countries such as China, Japan, and Thailand makes Jeju Island, along with nearby Busan, a convenient and attractive destination for regional travellers seeking short-haul international trips.
The Jeju–Seoul route effectively operates as a high-frequency “air metro,” with flight times typically under one hour. Fares are also relatively low, with reports of tickets being available for as little as £14, even during peak travel periods.
Despite being the busiest route in the world, there is still room for growth, as it continues to operate around 17% below pre-pandemic levels.
