Munich Airport (MUC) in Germany is now all set to see the deployment of laser installations following multiple drone sightings near the facility since the beginning of the month. As one of the several European hubs that have experienced attempts to disrupt operations by drones, German authorities hope that the newly installed laser systems will help prevent any incidents caused by unauthorised drone incursions.

The first drone incursion at Munich Airport was on the 2 October, prompting a preventative closure after sightings near the facility. This led to the cancellation of 17 flights on Thursday evening, with a further 15 flights diverted to other airports in southern Germany and even to Vienna International Airport (VIE), in neighboring Austria, as search operations commenced. Additional sightings were reported on 3 and 4 October, causing further disruption to flight schedules.

While a few days of drone activity may be considered a minor annoyance, continued incidents pose a serious threat to the sustainability of airport operations. The laser technology being installed at the airport will assist in determining the distance of the offending drone from the airport, which will help search procedures should further sightings occur in the vicinity.

The timing of the incidents caused massive disruption, particularly as 3 October is a busy public holiday (German Unity Day), leaving many passengers in need of temporary overnight accommodation. Munich Airport explained that "camp beds were set up, and blankets, drinks, and snacks were provided" as staff worked together with the affected airlines to provide support to passengers.
