One might assume that in an airline captain's unofficial list of essential equipment and supplies, coffee would rank near the top, helping them stay alert during flights spanning multiple countries and oceans. In an unexpected turn of events, a cup of coffee indirectly caused a United Airlines flight to be grounded last week. According to reports, the coffee was spilled in the cockpit.
While this may sound like a personal anecdote the captain might share with their colleagues and family, this also brings into focus the importance of safety when dealing with complex electrical systems located on the flight deck of a modern airliner. The potential damage caused by the presence of liquid in such a sensitive area means that safety must take precedence. It is not very surprising to learn that this is not the first time that a cup of coffee has disrupted airline operations.

The flight was departing from its hub at Chicago O'Hare International Airport and was bound for San Juan, Puerto Rico. The return flight was also affected by the incident.
In the event of such a spillage, the airline is responsible for more than simply cleaning up the liquid. In this case, United Airlines must ensure that a thorough inspection is carried out in the area where coffee was spilled, to confirm that the electronic systems in the cockpit have not been damaged and are functioning correctly.
